Alex Haw is one of the many persons in the exploration program. One of the projects he has been working on is the CLOUD. It a proposal for an inhabitable digital landmark structure for London. It marries the ongoing British fascination for weather with a contemporary immersion in the digital climate of humanity.

It began as the finalist submission for the Stratford Olympic Landmark competition initiated by Mayor Boris Johnson. Carlo Ratti was invited to submit a shortlist proposal and gathered an international team including Atmos, ARUP, Google, Schlaich Bergermann, and a wider net of notables including Umberto Eco. The Olympic Delivery Authority chose Anish Kapoor’s Orbit over the CLOUD, but Carlo Ratti Associati, Atmos and others are pursuing implementation of the project privately.

The CLOUD epitomises our evolution onwards from sculptural form towards informational architecture. The CLOUD proposes an entirely new form of observation deck, connecting visitors to both the whole of London and the whole of the world, immersing them in the euphoric gusts of physical weather and digital data. See the CLOUD website for more info; a great post by key collaborator Dan Hill is here.
